KISMET CELEBRATES THE FOURTH
Annual Parade & Block Party

THE 4TH OF JULY PARADE
Photos by Sharon, Caroline Stern & Peter Schmidt

A veritable cornucopia of colorful kiddies in vehicles of all sizes frantically cobbled together by their parents while the kids are stuffed into costumes and exhorted to smile and wave to get the judge’s notice for a prize, Preceded by the boom of marching bands from Islip, Bayshore, Ocean beach, Saltaire besides our own KFD the crowds line the streets and cheer wildly as the floats go by. This scares the kids who try to hide or flee but are restrained by the people who should protecting them – their parents. Little Anna, Miss Sunshine was carefully taught to smile and wave regally and did so…up until the parade started. Then deadpanned the entire event. Then all 18 floats were herded into the hot area behind the firehouse competing with KFD & KLAW t-shirts and raffles, the smoky air of food grilling beer swilling, the competition in chaos. The military theme, Paradoz’ son in law in his beribboned coast guard uniform (his mother a WWII vet), plus local pride in our future Firefighters, the environment represented by Carolyn Stern  carried a sign with the BP logo  and BP worked into Black Plague  with the number of days since it began and a tie between the oil spill by Pete and Company  and BP I want My Life Back. Most poignant was the tribute float to our late Fire chief Tom Sitone by his and the Lambie family. Amid the cacophony the strains of God Bless America united the crowd in a stirring moment
